Tent Cot Reviews

For a lot of people out there, camping is just a matter of comfort. After a hard week at work, you want to get away, enjoy the nature and feel relaxed.

But sometimes camping just doesn’t offer you that as bad weather can ruin it all: leaking tent soaking everything inside of it, humid ground causing you to freeze in your sleep or simply a rocky terrain bumping your back.

There is a solution to your problems and it’s called a tent cot.

A cot is definitely not a piece of equipment one would want to carry in their backpack.

It is designed for car camping and this same reason is what stand for most people considering it a bulk item.

Advantages:

  • Much comfortable sleep that on the ground: no rocks, sticks, holes to bump in your back.
  • A cot will keep you and your sleeping bag away from the cold ground.
  • Easy to stretch and install, doesn’t break as easily as the air mattresses and doesn’t require the amount of time that inflating mattresses is.
  • You can use it inside your tent or outside for just bathing in the sun.

Disadvantages:

  • Can be quite heavy and big so it is not a piece of gear for hikers.
  • Does not offer insulation: it protects you against the cold ground, but not against the cold air under it. However, this only applies to extreme cold weather conditions.
  • Some small tents will not fit a cot inside.

Kamp-Rite Tent Cot

Kamp-Rite has had a very original idea to put a cot and a tent in just one product! The tent cot is a free standing tent that uses a cot as base floor.

This product has become the favorite camping gear of lots of people that wanted comfort and ease of installation in one.

The cot sets you about 11 inches above the ground for a comfortable sleep: away from rocks, sticks, ground irregularities or little animals like snakes and rodents.

The beauty of this product is that you won’t have to deal with the trouble of setting up and installing an actual tent: so many loose parts for which you need instructions and which you can easily lose.

No more hammering stakes in the ground! Cot tent is as easy as pulling it out from its bag and fold it out!

The frames are made of resistant and lightweight aluminum tubes connected by anti-vibration aluminum nuts that won’t rust in time.

The tents fabric is 450 denier nylon and the floor (the surface you sleep on) is made of Cordura fabric which is the finest and most durable used for tents.

The ventilation is assured by the 2 doors and windows on each side that have no-see-um mesh panels, if you wish to look at the night sky or just enjoy the sunlight.

The full rainfly comes in as an accessory and can be purchased separately for about $60. For some people this is a disadvantage as whenever you go camping you risk facing rain and bad weather conditions.

The newer models also come in with foam pads for more comfort and also for some extra insulation against the elements: during extreme weather temperature, sleeping just in your sleeping bag will not be enough to keep the cold air under the cot away from decreasing your body temperature.

Foam pads are the most adequate for these situations. For more comfort you can also use air mattresses.

Model and Variety

The first Cots were made with a flat top, but newer models are designed as dome types so that water and snow will not accumulate on the top of them.

This also proved to add more space if you wish to stand inside without bending your neck.

It comes in few variants including the single person Cot, double Tent Cot and the Oversized Tent Cot.

The Oversized and the Double Tent Cot have some extra aluminum bars holding the base.

All the models come with heavy duty carrying bags for easy transportation and safe storing.

There are some little cot variants built for kids: lively colors and fit dimensions is what makes their name: Fun Cots.

They can weight about 43 lbs which doesn’t make it impossible to transport, but will make it difficult to install by just one person.

The prices vary from $150 to $400 depending on the model and size.

Keep in mind that you might have to spend some extra for accessories.
